The actor who played "Q" in Star Trek, the Next Generation is John De Lancie. He said, "a lot of the kids who grew up watching science fiction movies and television series, like Star Trek, went on to become today's IT professional." He further commented that "real-life software developers can use sci-fi's inspiration to help them build technologies that will make people healthier and make their lives easier and more productive" (Gaudin, 2007).

Technology As Important As Movies

There are several reasons why the time between 1990 to the present is significant. Film special effects have become nearly as important as the movies themselves. Disney’s computers (computer farm picture shown above) have replaced camera operators. The people who supported the camera operators like electricians, carpenters, grips and truck drivers are no longer needed. Movies makers are no longer building elaborate sets and using green screens with computer animation (Howell, 2001).
